Douglas a front runner for head coach’s role

Former top sprinter Troy Douglas appears to have the inside track in the race to become to become the new National Track and Field head coach.Douglas is understood to be one of three interested persons who have applied for the position, including former triple jumper Brian Wellman, who served in the capacity for this year’s Carifta Games and most recently at the London Olympics.Douglas, a past Olympian, has expressed his desire to return home from Holland where he has been living for several years and has been coaching that country’s sprinters. He coached the Netherlands’ men’s 4x100 metre relay team at the Olympics, but in a recent Royal Gazette article Douglas, 49, admitted his heart still belongs in his homeland and is desperate to help inspire the next generation of local athletes achieve greatness on the world stage.“If the opportunity presented itself (to coach Bermuda) I would gladly say yes,” said the four-time Olympic sprinter.“I would definitely stop what I’m doing and come straight home to help Donna Watson (Bermuda Track and Field Association’s president) and her fantastic team. If the situation ever presented itself you would be talking to me as a Bermuda national coach.”Douglas won silver at the 1995 World Indoor Championships in the 200 metres, considers Bermuda a hotbed of athletic talent and believes the Island will send a far bigger team to Rio in four years’ time than they did to London.Watson recently stated during a sports programme on television that Douglas was a frontrunner for the national coach post, which was last held on an official basis by Gerry Swan.The Bermuda Track and Field Association will announce the appointment during a press conference on Friday at their office.
